The name, image and likeness (NIL) era of college athletics officially kicks off on Thursday, July 1, and if you work in college athletics or an NIL-related industry, I’d like to hear about your experiences on Thursday for Friday’s newsletter.
If you’re willing to connect by phone or email Thursday afternoon/evening, drop me a line at andrew [dot] wittry [at] gmail [dot] com or message me on Twitter, and if you’re an athlete, coach or administrator, I can grant you anonymity if that allows you to speak more freely.
Or, if you’re simply a fan of college sports who has any questions about NIL that you’d like answered, feel free to comment below.
I'm curious, how will the NIL era affect the average, not-famous athlete? For example, does your typical backup tight end at a P5 school stand anything to gain by the new rules? Nobody ever wanted his autograph anyways lol. Isn't his scholarship now at risk?
Hey Scott, scholarships won't be at risk with the passing of state laws related to NIL or the NCAA's new temporary policy on NIL. Every athlete has the potential to gain something, whether it's revenue from endorsements, monetizing a business they've started or even running athletic camps in their hometown.
It might take a year or two for the market to mature and for there to be analysis of what the average athlete earns, but I can check in to see if there are any "backup tight end"-type deals that are finalized Thursday.
